Chris was appointed as Undersheriff for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in February 2023. Prior to that he served the Mountain View community for more than 28 years, serving as a sexual assault detective, high tech crimes detective, person crimes detective and on the department SWAT team. As he rose through the ranks, he ultimately served or led in every division of the organization and was appointed police chief in 2020. As the department’s police chief, he was passionate about creating workplace cultures that value dignity, fairness, and respect.

Chris is a nationally recognized speaker and writer on the area of adaptive leadership cultures, digital engagement, and crisis communications. He is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Senior Executives in State and Local Government program and has a master’s degree in eBusiness Management from Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, CA. He’s also a founding board member of “The Curve,” a non-profit formed by Simon Sinek, police chiefs, and sheriffs from across the country with the mission of providing the most current leadership development and resources to forward-thinking leaders in policing in order to modernize police culture from the inside-out.

Chris serves in several leadership positions on multiple boards, including his service as a co-chair on the International Assoc. of Chiefs of Police Human & Civil Rights Committee and board member on the Global Advisory Council for the Crisis Ready Institute. Previously, Chris served as president on the Government Social Media Leadership Council, board member for the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center and two terms as a commissioner on the City of San Mateo Community Relations Commission. He’s a previous GSMCON 2017 winner of the Top Social Media Advocate in Government award, ELGL Top 10 Traeger Award winner, and 2017 GovTech Top 25 Doer, Dreamer, and Driver.
